Coffee Each Day May Keep Alzheimer’s Away – Science & Health news

(Newser) – Researchers don’t quite know why, but a new study suggests that moderate coffee intake dramatically reduces the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease, AFP reports. A 20-year Finnish study of 1,409 subjects shows middle-aged people who drink 3-5 cups a day are 60% to 65% less likely to contract the disease later in life.

Explanations for coffee’s Alzheimer-fighting properties are wide-ranging. A cup of joe contains strong antioxidants, known to reduce risk of the disease. Also, coffee has been shown to protect against diabetes, a predictor of Alzheimer’s, and to aid the nerve system, helping ward off dementia. The revelation comes a day after another study demonstrated a link between excessive caffeine intake and hallucination.
